LISA SCHEER is a longtime DC-based artist who is widely known for both her public and private scaled sculptures. She has exhibited her work at many distinguished Washington area institutions including one-person exhibitions at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Phillips Collection, the American Institute of Architecture, and the Kreeger Museum. Throughout her career, Scheer has had long term relationships with prominent DC galleries, including the Nancy Drysdale Gallery and Hemphill Fine Arts.
The dominant aspect of Scheer's sculpture practice since 2005 has been the creation of large-scale public sculptures. Her public commissions include works created for the Reagan National Airport, the Eastern District Federal Courthouse in Brooklyn, NY, the BWI Airport in Baltimore, and the Petworth Metro Station in DC. She has completed many commissions in partnership with area developers that enliven public streetscapes and building interiors including works located at the Park Van Ness Center (4455 Connecticut Ave NW Washington, DC), the Clarendon Center located (3030 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington, VA), and Tysons Park Place II (7930 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA.) Her commissions are designed to be site responsive, often directly integrating into the existing architecture and landscape features.
Scheer's work has been recognized through several national grants and awards, including a Pollock Krasner Foundation fellowship, two NEA fellowships, and a Maryland Arts Council Fellowship. Beyond her studio practice, Scheer was a professor of sculpture at St. Mary's College of Maryland from 1981-2021 and has been an active DC area art community member including serving on the board of the WPA from 1989-1995 and acting as consultant and juror for many area commissions.
